Iowa Psychologists
Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.
The Iowa Board of Psychology Examiners accepts courses from any provider who is approved by the American Psychological Association.
Continuing Education Requirement
Psychologists are required 40 hours every two years, all of which may be completed by home study. During the 2nd renewal period, a minimum of 6 hours are required in either Iowa mental health laws and regulations, or risk management. Every renewal period thereafter, 6 hours are required in one of the following: ethical issues, federal mental health laws and regulations, Iowa mental health laws and regulations, or risk management.
Mandatory reporters are required 2 hours in identifying and reporting abuse of children and/or 2 hours in identifying and reporting abuse of dependent adults, unless exempt. Beginning July 1, 2024, licensees must complete the 2-hour core training curriculum(s), every three years. The initial 2 hours must be completed within the first six months of employment/self-employment. All mandatory reporter training may only be completed through the Iowa Dept of Health and Human Services. See training here: https://hhs.iowa.gov/report-abuse-fraud/mandatory-reporters.
