Maine Physicians CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals

Maine Physicians

In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine and the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure accept courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Continuing Education Requirement

MDs are required 40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, including 3 hours on the prescribing of opioid medication, every renewal.

DOs are required 100 hours, including 3 hours on the prescribing of opioid medication, every renewal. A minimum of 40 hours must be AOA Category 1-A or 1-B, and a maximum of 60 hours may be AOA Category 2-B.*

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.

A medical provider who has not previously issued a written certification to a qualifying patient for the medical use of marijuana must submit evidence of completion of a one-hour continuing education course regarding medical marijuana within the preceding two years, prior to issuing written certifications.

*NetCE courses are considered AOA Category 2-B.
