Florida Physicians CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals
Florida Physicians
In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
The Florida Board of Medicine accepts courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
The Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine accepts a maximum of 8 hours from any provider who is AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.*
In addition, NetCE is an approved provider through the Florida Board of Medicine, CE Broker Provider #50-2405. NetCE will electronically report successful course completions to CE Broker.
Continuing Education Requirement
MDs are required 38 general hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ every two years. Mandates include:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention every two years, in addition to general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substance Medications every two years for MDs who are registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and authorized to prescribe controlled substances, included in general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal, included in general hours.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
If renewing a license for the first time, physicians are exempt from the general CE requirements and are only required to complete:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention; and
- One (1) hour on HIV/AIDS
DOs are required 40 general hours every two years, 20 hours of which must be AOA Category 1. A maximum of 8 hours may be taken by home study.* Mandates include:
- One (1) hour of Laws and Rules/Professional Medical Ethics (must be live/participatory) every two years, included in general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention (must be live/participatory) every two years, included in general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substance Medications every two years for DOs who are registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and authorized to prescribe controlled substances, included in general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal (may be home study), in addition to general hours.

In addition, for all first time renewals osteopathic physicians licensed subsequent to July 1 of the second year of the biennium are required:
- One (1) hour of Laws and Rules/Professional Medical Ethics (must be live/participatory)
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention (must be live/participatory)
In addition, for all first time renewals osteopathic physicians licensed prior to July 1 of the second year of the biennium are required:
- One (1) hour of Laws and Rules/Professional Medical Ethics (must be live/participatory)
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention (must be live/participatory)
- Two (2) hours of Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substance Medications
- One (1) hour on HIV/AIDS, one-time only (may be home study)
DPMs are required 40 hours every two years. A maximum of 8 hours may be taken by home study.* Mandates include:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention
- One (1) hour on Laws and Rules of the Board, and the regulatory agency under which the Board operates
- One (1) hour of Risk Management
- Two (2) hours of Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substance Medications (for podiatric physicians who are registered with the DEA)
- One (1) hour on Human Trafficking, one-time only
- Licensees may complete up to 3 hours in the area of Practice Management, per biennium
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
If renewing a license for the first time, podiatric physicians are required:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention
- One (1) hour of Board-approved education on HIV/AIDS
- One full day of attendance at a Florida Board of Podiatric Medicine meeting, at which disciplinary hearings are conducted as provided in subsection 64B18-17.005, F.A.C.
Pursuant to the Florida Department of Health Trauma Center Standards, emergency physicians and pediatric emergency physicians who are licensed or certified to work at a trauma center must complete a minimum of 5 hours of continuing education on trauma-related topics every year, 2 hours of which must be on the topic of pediatric trauma for pediatric emergency physicians, or if the emergency physician cares for pediatric trauma patients. General surgeons and pediatric surgeons who are licensed or certified to work at a trauma center must complete 10 hours of continuing education on trauma-related topics every year, 5 hours of which must be on the topic of pediatric trauma for pediatric surgeons, or if the general surgeon manages pediatric trauma patients.

* NetCE courses are considered AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ home study.
