New Mexico Nurses CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals

New Mexico Nurses

In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The New Mexico Board of Nursing accepts courses from any provider who is ANCC accredited.

Continuing Education Requirement

The New Mexico Board of Nursing accepts NetCE courses.

NetCE is an approved provider through CE Broker, Provider #50-2405.
NetCE will electronically report successful course completions to CE Broker.

LPNs, RNs and APRNs are required 30 contact hours every two years; or proof of RN or APRN specialty recertification.

APRN-CNP and APRN-CNS must submit a copy of valid APRN national certification every two years.

APRN-CRNA must submit a copy of NBCRNA recertification every two years.

Certification or recertification granted by a national professional organization which uses criteria designed to recognize competence in a specialized area of nursing practice may be used as approved CE. Verification of certification or recertification within the current renewal period is accepted in lieu of the 30 hours of continuing education required for licensure.

All APRNs with DEA registration and licensure that permits prescribing opioids are required 5 hours in non-cancer pain management to include:

  • A review of rule 16.12.9 NMAC for management of non-cancer pain;
  • An understanding of the pharmacology and risks of controlled substances;
  • A basic awareness of the problems of abuse, addiction and diversion; and
  • Awareness of state and federal regulations for controlled substances prescribing.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.

APRN-CNP and APRN-CNS without DEA registration must provide copy of valid APRN national certification.

APRN-CRNA without DEA registration must provide copy of NBCRNA recertification.

APRN-CNS with controlled substances prescriptive and dispensing authority may complete 45 hours of advanced level pharmacology continuing education in lieu of a three credit-hour graduate level advanced nursing program academic pharmacology course.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.

The New Mexico Department of Health encourages certifying practitioners to completed at least 2 CME hours related to the medicinal use of cannabis each year.

CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives) and LMs (Licensed Midwives) are licensed and regulated by the Maternal Health Program under the New Mexico Department of Health. LMs are required to maintain certification through NARM; and complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every renewal period. CNMs are required to maintain AMCB certification; and complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every renewal period, 15 hours of which must be related to pharmacology, including a minimum of 2 hours (5 hours for first renewal), on any of the following topics:
