Michigan Advanced Practice Registered Nurses CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals
Michigan Nurses
In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
The Michigan Board of Nursing accepts courses from any provider who is ANCC accredited.
Continuing Education Requirement
The Michigan Board of Nursing accepts NetCE courses.
NetCE is an approved provider through CE Broker, Provider #50-2405.
NetCE will
electronically report successful course completions to CE Broker.
RN and LPN are required 25 contact hours every two years, 2 of which must be in pain and symptom management. There is a one-time requirement at initial licensure for training in identifying victims of human trafficking which may not be completed for Nursing continuing education credit.
APRNs (NA, NP, NM and CNS) in addition to meeting continuing education
requirements for RN license renewal, APRNs must complete additional education
depending on their credentials.
NA are required to maintain
certification through NBCRNA (under the AANA guidelines).
NP are
required to maintain national certification with certifying body (requirements
vary).
NM may complete AMCB continuing competency assessment or
complete 20 hours in the specialty.
CNS are required to maintain
certification through ANCC or the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses
(AACN) Certification Corporation.
NEW Beginning June 1, 2022, an applicant for licensure or registration must have completed a minimum of two (2) hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration. For every renewal thereafter, in addition to completing any continuing education required for renewal, reregistration, or relicensure, an applicant must have completed a minimum of one (1) hour of implicit bias training for each year of the applicant's license or registration cycle. Instruction must be synchronous/interactive or asynchronous teleconference or webinar. Unless prohibited by the code or rules, this training may be used to satisfy other training or continuing education requirements for license renewal. Nurses may complete implicit bias for contining education credit. (Per MI Public Health Code R 338.7004 eff 5/16/2024.)
NEW Beginning with applications and renewals on and after May 28, 2024, licensed prescribers or dispensers of controlled substances must complete training in opioids and controlled substance awareness, every renewal period. Delegatees (other than a physician's assistant), or those allowed by practice agreement, or order to prescribe or dispense a controlled substance by a licensed prescriber or dispenser must complete a controlled substances training one time during the applicable license cycle. Topics may be obtained from more than one program. (Per MI Board of Pharmacy R 338.3135 eff 5/28/2024)
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
