West Virginia Dental Professionals

The West Virginia Board of Dental Examiners accepts courses from any provider who is ADA or AGD approved.

Continuing Education

The West Virginia Board of Dental Examiners accepts NetCE courses.

Dentists are required 35 hours every two years, all of which may be completed online for the reporting period ending February 1, 2024 (after which a maximum of 80% by graded audio/visual, graded correspondence, or graded computer courses will apply).* A minimum of 2 of the 35 hours shall be related to any one or combination of the following subjects every two years:

  • Infection control and/or occupational hazards,
  • Oral effects of tobacco use, or
  • Oral effects of substance abuse.

Beginning with the February 1, 2018 reporting deadline, licensed dentists are required 3 hours in drug diversion, best practice prescribing of controlled substances, and opioid antagonist prescribing and administration.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment of patients with (or at risk of developing) opioid and other substance use disorders, one-time only.

Dental Hygienists are required 20 hours every two years, all of which may be completed online for the reporting period ending February 1, 2024 (after which a maximum of 80% by graded audio/visual, graded correspondence, or graded computer courses will apply).* A minimum of 2 of the 20 hours shall be related to any one or combination of the following subjects every two years:

  • Infection control and/or occupational hazards,
  • Oral effects of tobacco use, or
  • Oral effects of substance abuse.

* NetCE courses are considered graded correspondence courses and graded computer courses.
