Continuing Education

Dentists are required 28 general hours every two years, all of which may be completed by home study.*
Mandates include:

  • Two (2) hours of Medical Errors every renewal, in addition to general hours.
  • Two (2) hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal, in addition to general hours.
  • Two (2) hours of safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances medication every renewal, included in general hours.
  • Dentists holding an active sedation permit must complete (4) hours in Medical Emergencies every renewal, included in general hours. Course must contain a hands-on airway management component for Board-approval.
  • Two (2) hours of HIV/AIDS one-time only, at initial renewal.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment of patients with (or at risk of developing) opioid and other substance use disorders, one-time only.
