The Alabama Board of Dental Examiners accepts courses from any provider who is ADA approved.
Continuing Education Requirement
The Alabama Board of Dental Examiners accepts NetCE courses.
Dentists are required 20 hours every year, 10 of which may be completed by correspondence or distance-based education.* Specific requirements include:
- A minimum of 1 hour in infectious disease control every 2 years.
- A minimum of 1 hour on prescribing controlled substances every 2 years.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment of patients with (or at risk of developing) opioid and other substance use disorders, one-time only.
A maximum of 4 hours may be on the topics of insurance, government regulations, tort liability, and/or risk management, and a maximum of 3 hours may be on the topic of practice management, annually.
Dentists who hold oral conscious sedation permits are required a minimum of 2 hours in sedation and/or anesthesia, every 2 years.
Dental Hygienists are required 12 hours every year, 6 of which may be completed by correspondence or distance-based education.* A minimum of 1 of the 12 hours must be in infectious disease control, every 2 years.
A maximum of 4 hours may be on the topics of insurance, government regulations, tort liability, and/or risk management, and a maximum of 3 hours may be on the topic of practice management, annually.
*NetCE courses are considered correspondence or distance-based education.
