Every New York healthcare professional who has previously completed child abuse training must now complete an updated curriculum. This curriculum includes essential topics such as adverse childhood experiences, trauma, implicit bias, and the identification of child abuse in virtual settings. This course is designed to help healthcare professionals define child abuse, identify affected children, and connect with community resources available in New York. By understanding how to recognize and accurately diagnose cases of abuse, professionals can make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

1. Evaluate indicators of abuse and maltreatment, including those in virtual environments.
2. Recognize the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences on children, families, and healthcare providers.
3. Describe the protective factors that can mitigate trauma effects.
4. Analyze how implicit bias may influence your decision-making.
5. Identify legal obligations for reporting to the State Central Register (SCR).
6. Discuss ways to connect individuals and families with support services.
7. Outline the preparation process for contacting the SCR.
8. Describe the completion of the LDSS 2221A form.
9. Review mandated reporter rights in New York State.

Note that while New York mental health professionals, including counselors, therapists, and social workers, cannot take this course for CE credit, they are able to complete this course as training on NetCE.

According to the New York State Education Department, Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework.

This law requires that mandated reporters, including those who have previously undergone the current training, complete the updated training curriculum by April 1, 2025.

We support the CE/CME needs of the following healthcare professions that are required to complete training related to New York’s child abuse identification and reporting mandate:

• Physicians
• Physician Assistants
• Registered Nurses
• Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
• Dentists
• Dental Hygienists

The following mental health professionals are able to complete this course for training, but will not be able to receive CE credit:

• Licensed Clinical Social Workers
• Licensed Master Social Workers
• Marriage and Family Therapists
  
• Mental Health Counselors

Yes, all individuals previously trained in child abuse prevention must now complete a revised curriculum covering adverse childhood experiences, trauma, implicit bias, and recognizing child abuse in virtual environments for the New York CE requirement.

By April 1, 2025, New York mandated reporters are required to fulfill the updated child abuse recognition and reporting training curriculum.

NetCE's course, Child Abuse Identification and Reporting: An Update for New York, is approved by the New York State Education Department to fulfill the requirement for 2 hours of training in the Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment. Provider #80673.

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.

NetCE has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6361. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NetCE is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
