Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only. What is the CE update for safe opioid prescribing for healthcare professionals?
Beginning with renewals on and after January 1, 2025, health care professionals have an updated statutory mandate of at least 1 hour on safe opioid prescribing practices. (720 ILCS 570/315.5 IL Controlled Substances Act amended per PA 103-0531 enacted 8/11/2023 effective 1/1/2025) Any licensee whose next renewal is on or after January 1, 2025 is eligible to complete this requirement now.
I’m a prescriber who needs 3 hours of opioid education to prescribe Schedule II medications. Can I apply one of those hours to meet the new requirement?
Yes, if you have completed the 3-hour requirement, that will also satisfy the new 1-hour opioid requirement.
What professions does NetCE support to complete their opioid CE requirement?

Do I need to complete updated training if I have already completed mandated training related to opioid prescribing in the past?
Yes, according to Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation there is no exemption for the first renewal of your Controlled Substances Registration.
