Holiday Gifts for Nurses:
Spreading Joy to Our Healthcare Heroes

By Mary Franks, MSN, APRN-FPA, FNP-C

While I may be a bit biased (I’ve been a nurse for almost 15 years), I think many can agree that nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system. And as the holiday season is in full swing, there's no better way to spread joy than by showing appreciation to the nurses who work tirelessly to care for others. Whether you're looking for a gift for a friend, family member, or a nurse who has made a difference in your life, here are some of my favorite holiday gift ideas for nurses that are sure to bring a smile to their face.

Comfortable Shoes

As a shoe lover myself, I need a nice comfortable shoe to wear in the urgent care setting. I prefer sneakers with good arch support but also a fresh style. My unsponsored endorsement?  HOKA, Figs New Balance 996 style, Asics, Brooks, and Nike are top tier choices — I prefer Nike Pegasus 41 currently. Another comfortable shoe option would be to choose something they can wear while not at work, like recovery sandals or Crocs.

Personalized Ornaments

A personalized ornament can be a heartfelt and memorable gift. Consider an ornament that features their name, profession, or a special message. Each year, as they hang it on their tree, they'll be reminded of your appreciation and the impact they make.

Warm and Cozy Accessories

Help nurses stay warm during the chilly winter months with cozy accessories like scarves, gloves, and hats. Opt for high-quality materials like wool or cashmere for added comfort and warmth. A pair of fuzzy socks or a soft throw blanket can also make for a delightful gift. Don’t forget the slippers!

Holiday Gift Baskets

A holiday gift basket filled with their favorite treats is always a hit. Consider including items like gourmet chocolates, cookies, coffee shop gift card, and festive snacks. Keep in mind any allergens your favorite nurse may have. You can also add in some self-care items like scented candles, bath salts, and a good book for a relaxing evening at home.

Customized Tumblers and Mugs

Nurses often rely on coffee or tea to get through their long shifts. Nurses also need to remain hydrated with water. A customized tumbler or mug with their name or a fun holiday design can make their beverage breaks more enjoyable. Look for insulated options that keep drinks hot or cold for hours, as well as sweatproof options.

Spa Day Gift Certificate

Give the gift of relaxation with a spa day gift certificate. A massage, facial, or a full day of pampering can help them unwind and recharge. If a spa day isn't feasible, consider a DIY spa kit with bath bombs, face masks, and luxurious lotions.

Hand Creams/Lotions

Nurses have hearts of gold. Their hands should feel the love, too. Constant washing and sanitizing of their hands expose nurses to dry and chapped hands, leaving nurses to potentially feel discomfort and confidence issues. Lotions like Gold Bond Healing Hand creamO’Keefe’s Working Hands Crème, Aveeno Active Naturals Intense Moisture Skin Relief, and Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream are a few of my personal favorites. A word of advice: avoid fragranced options.

Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes are gifts that keeps on giving. There are many options tailored to different interests, such as beauty boxes, snack boxes, book clubs, and wellness kits. Ideally you should choose a subscription that aligns with their hobbies and interests for a thoughtful and personalized gift. Ask some of their colleagues or family members for ideas if you’re not sure what to get.

Handwritten Thank You Notes and Flowers

Sometimes, the most meaningful gifts are the simplest. A handwritten thank you note expressing your gratitude and appreciation can be incredibly touching. Pair it with a small token of appreciation, like a holiday candle or a box of chocolates, to make it extra special. Flowers also add a signature touch to the thank you note and something your favorite nurse would love to have in their home.

Tech Gadgets

Help them stay connected and entertained with the latest tech gadgets. Consider gifts like wireless earbuds, a portable phone charger, or a smartwatch. These gadgets can make their busy lives a little easier and more enjoyable. Some nurses who work in high critical areas may also enjoy techy stethoscope options such as Littman CORE Digital or Eko Digital. Ear buds are a great option for those times your favorite nurse wants to unwind with some music or audio books. Consider noise canceling options for ear buds (brands like Beats, Soundcore, or Apple Airpods are on many nurses’ wish lists).

Nurses also use their phones regularly for different reasons. The Sharper Image Smartphone Charger + UV Sanitizer has become a fan favorite especially in peak illness periods. One tech gadget on my radar for a hospitalist nurse practitioner colleague of mine is a vein finder.

The holiday season is the perfect time to show appreciation for the nurses who dedicate their lives to caring for others. Whether it's a festive item to brighten their work day or a thoughtful gift to help them relax and unwind, these gift ideas for nurses are sure to bring joy to the incredible nurses in your life. Remember, it's the thought and effort that count the most, and any gesture of gratitude will be deeply appreciated.
